I’m glad to say I haven’t had this conversation this past semester, but I have had very similar negotiations over my years of teaching.

    I once had a professor who announced in the first week of class that he, under no circumstances, offered extra credit. His reasoning was that people ask for extra credit when they’re getting a bad grade; if you can’t handle the normal credit, how are you supposed to be able to do *extra* credit?

    I had another professor who would put extra credit questions on the end of his tests…they were usually stuff like, “What is my favorite book?”
