I don’t give multiple choice quizzes either. I think more highly of my students than that.
To be clear, they aren’t necessarily happy with a more in your face Socratic approach, because I expect more from them than they expect from themselves.
I have given multiple choice quizzes but only in extremet situation ( >70 students a semester situations) and always coupled with short essays. This year I’ve replaced quizzes with weekly graded blogging assignments. It’s more work all around, but I think it’s a better pedagogical model for the kind of classes I’m currently teaching.
