I wish this were the case here as well. It seems that Philly’s library system now runs exclusively on fines due to government cutbacks. And I’ve got a forgetful bibliophile for a son. Twice this summer we wound up paying more in fines than a given book was worth.

I had an acquaintance growing up, a book trader, who claimed to have read every last word of each book he had ever bought or sold.
Apparently this was true. Every time he’d get a new book, he’d open the back cover and read the last word in the volume.
Thank goodness that library fines in many places have gone the way of the dodo.
