I’m assuming this was for the national conference? I didn’t submit a paper this year. I’m too busy trying to get the *#%@ dissertation off my desk. But, hope all goes well! I plan on being at the national meeting in Atlanta (and the regional MAR next week).

Jim, I submitted a paper this year on Qohelet’s carpe diem advice, you may be interested in. Naturally, I am not saying anything new, just pushing for dialogue to move in a certain direction. We’ll see if my paper gets accepted.

Thanks for commenting. The 2002 paper was on empirical epistemology and Qohelet. I think that a strong case can be made against Fox’s contention that Qohelet is doing something new in this regard. I used texts from Mesopotamian wisdom traditions and the genre distinctions of Tremper Longman to construct my argument.

I had a few years in my life when I thought I would write my dissertation on Qohelet. (Un)fortuntately, I became convinced of Qohelet’s teachings and figured there was nothing new to say on the topic.

Ecclesiastes and Moby-Dick sounds quite fun. It’s a good way to remind folks that the Bible is first and foremost literature. I hope your paper gets approved and that I can catch it. See you there!

Thanks for posting the info on the SBL regional meeting (in your August 19 entry).
I’m a little late for the deadline. Somehow I had in my head that it was December 10. I noticed in your CV that you gave a presentation on the genre of Qoheleth in 2002. Too bad I didn’t make that meeting. I have just finished a commentary on Ecclesiastes for the New Beacon Bible Commentary. I’m hoping to present a paper at the March meeting on allusions to Ecclesiastes in Moby-Dick.
